Artists and Their Models - Masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou

Great !!! I went too! The following assay is written by me :

This exhibition shows many sculptures and pictures. There are five sections include Muses, Distortions, Visions Friends and Pastiches.

“Sleeping Muse” impresses me. It is made by bronze. He has a smooth face, short hair and tall nose, but I can’t hardly to see whether his eyes open or close. So it allows me to imagine that is why so-called muse.

“Reading” involves two people. They love like a robot. Actually, this is the message what the artist want to bring out. If you want to understand this art, you learn the story behind it. Légers finished the art during time of industrial century. And he use machine as a model to imagine to a human. Anyone feel it. Ask people were painted by circle and oval just like a marionette we saw on cartoon.

Next, distortion is a new method to express artists feeling by distorting the body structure or facial expression of model. Francis created a picture called “Three Figures in a Room”. I originally thank that three people are in the same room. They are paint separately may due to the paper not enough for him to paint. The truth is that they are the same model and he painted in different periods. These models look like a toy on the round table. They have different post but distorted.

“The chess players” was created by Marcel Duchamp. I think it is a chaos because I can’t see any chess but only table and people. For me, they look like sitting in the bar or café after work and enough their drink. As this picture is quite dark but romantic and secrete. Therefore different pictures for different people may have different feeling. “Portrait of Chess Players” looks like “The chess players”. These pictures are not colourful only two or three colors, black, white and milky. It makes me feel that the artist is very unhappy. I can only see his dark side.

Pablo Picasso’s “Harlequin” can be categorised as Visions. He look like a baroness but actually he is a circus. His has only little color painted on his face and neck. “Bullets Russes” have confusion between different materials of painted newspapers and newspapers. Artists not only direct paint color directly on the paper but also paint the color on the newspaper and then paste on the picture.

The fourth section is Friends, all the artworks is about individual model painting. They show different attribute of people by gestures, pose and facial expression.

Finally, Pastiches is also called Pop Art. As it is not only a picture but also a sculpture. They create a three dimension for the audients. As they put some real things on the picture such as “Made in Japan- The Great Odalisque”. The artist put some button on her head and look like a decoration. I like “Olympia in Blackface 1970” was created by American artist. He made a double Olympia. The real Olympia is white while the servant is black. But he made another copy that the Olympia is black while the servant is white. It can be understand that they artist want to express the human right between Negroes and white people should be equal.

In this exhibition, I recognized that appreciate an art not only concern their superficial but also their content and history. In this exhibition, they also ask me for thinking about the relationship between models and artists. We may not know but we can guess. It is a kind of guess work. Never have absolute correct answer just like art.
